| The History of Ye Olde Bertie Arms
The Bertie Arms, built in 1681, was part of the Uffington House Estate. The Bertie family lived at Uffington House from 1674 and owned various properties in the village.
Bertie (the Hon. Charles) son of Montague Earl of Lindsey represented Stamford in Parliament for thirty years and died in 1710. His great Grandson General Albermarle Bertie became the 9th Earl of Lindsey in 1804. Tragically the house was burnt down on the 19th December 1904. The gates are all that remain.
The Bertie Arms was purchased privately in 1968. The stone built, thatched building is grade II listed and has recently been subject to internal renovation of the function room/restaurant.
It is now a quintessential English public house and restaurant, providing the charm and service synonymous with true British hostelry. Why not take a trip out and see it for yourself. |
